Homeowners in Thunder Bay can put out blue bags of recyclables at the curb every second garbage day. For folks living in apartments and condominiums it isn’t always this easy to recycle.
Ontario regulations require that apartment buildings have recycling facilities. This isn't always the case. In buildings where no recycling facilities exist, keen apartment dwellers have been recycling at the depots on Mountdale Avenue, Front Street, and at the Thunder Bay Solid Waste & Recycling Facility. But we know it needs to be more convenient to recycle in order to increase participation and divert valuable resources from the landfill site.
The City of Thunder Bay has enlisted support from EcoSuperior to assist building managers and superintendents in setting up these programs for their tenants. We provide a resource person to work one-on-one with the building manager to figure out the logistics of setting up and maintaining an effective recycling program. We provide a kit with a recycling handbook full of ideas and tips for starting or improving a recycling program. We provide posters, fridge magnets, and other printed material for residents that clearly lay out the ‘whats’ and ‘hows’ of recycling.
Apartment Recycling Baskets:
One feature of the program is the apartment recycling basket, available for $3 each, designed to make recycling simple for each apartment dweller. This blue heavy-duty plastic basket fits conveniently in small places, mounts neatly inside a cupboard or closet, is easy to rinse clean, and has a comfortable handle so it can be carried with one hand to the recycling area.
If you are a property manager or superintendent for an apartment or condominium building call our resource person at 624-2142 for more information. If you have a common room in your building we can come and give a free 30 minute presentation to your tenants to help them understand the 'whats' and 'hows' of recycling.
If you are a tenant in a building that lacks recycling facilities, have your landlord contact our resource person (as above).
