Electronic waste contains toxic heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium which can leach into the soil and waterways when buried in a landfill.

image Until recently, most electronic waste, or E-Waste, was disposed of in our landfills or shipped overseas to areas where there are few or no regulations to protect the people or environment in that area.  The Ontario Electronic Stewardship program ensures that our electronic waste stays within Ontario (thus providing jobs) where health and safety standards are higher, and is traced until the components are made into new products or otherwise safely disposed of.  It is now FREE to dispose of these items as the financial responsibility is being placed on brand owners, first importers to Ontario and assemblers.  This program is being introduced in stages (stage II began in April 2010), so if you have an item that is not on the list, please hold onto it until it can be accepted.  Visit  Recycle Your Electronics  for more information.

Batteries contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and nickel, as well as corrosive acids, all of which can find their way into the air, soil and water if tossed in the garbage.

Below is a list of locations where batteries are accepted for recycling and safe disposal.  Be sure to use rechargeable batteries whenever possible.  They help reduce the amount of toxic waste being manufactured and save you money in the long run.

Have old batteries or electronics?  Don’t throw them out!  Help protect our health and environment by taking them to the following locations for safe recycling & disposal.
