Gas Mileage Calculator
To get the numbers your require for this calculator. When you fuel up your vehicle zero your trip meter (or write down your odometer number) and fill the tank to the top. When you next fuel up write down your trip meter value (or your new odometer reading) and ensure you fill your tank to the top again. Keep your gas receipt as it has your litres filled and price of gas. You then input your kilometers driven (subtract odometer reading if that's what you used), litres of fuel and gas price. It's that easy.
Not sure which is better gasoline or diesel? Feel free to read this article prepared by Grinning Planet in 2005. It has a great breakdown on emissions and economic comparisons.
To see your vehicles rated fuel efficiency visit Natural Resources Canada online database. The fuel rating you find on this site is the rating displayed in the vehicle window at dealerships. How does your fuel mileage compare to the government rated?
Fuel mileage recorded for a year in Thunder Bay driving a Cheverolet Aveo (rated 8.8 L/100km city and 6.1 L/100km hwy).
You'll notice the general trend is worse fuel economy in the winter and better in the summer. As well you'll notice the points with major improvements in fuel efficiency. These were hwy only kilometers and therefore resulted in the best efficiency. Keep your results and see how they pan out after a year.
