Go with the flow! Get back to the Tap on Bottled Water Free Day Thursday March 11, 2010
As a follow-up to EcoSuperior’s Back to the Tap Taste Challenge, city residents are being asked to recognize Thursday, March 11 as Bottled Water Free Day.
“It’s a national initiative that fits well with our local campaign to encourage people to make tap water their first choice,” says EcoSuperior Executive Director Ellen Mortfield. “We are asking individuals to carry a reusable bottle or cup and stick to tap water for the entire day.”
On Thursday March 11, Canadians from coast to cost will be participating in Canada’s first Bottled Water Free Day . Organized by the Canadian Federation of Students, Sierra Youth Coalition and the Polaris Institute, the day will highlight initiatives across the country to expose the impacts of bottled water and the positive policies to promote tap water. EcoSuperior is inviting local residents to participate in a number of ways.
“We’re hoping to see lots and lots of people signing the Back to the Tap pledge form ,” says Mortfield. “We’re also planning to repeat the taste challenge at Lakehead University. For those who would like to get their schools or workplaces involved, we have downloadable posters and activity suggestions.”
According to the Bottled Free Water Day website, over 70 municipalities across Canada have banned bottled water within their own operations. Sixteen national labour organizations and many schools and campuses are also supporting the initiative.
