Program Bookings:

EcoKits:

EcoSuperior is delighted to promote environmental learning for students in Thunder Bay or the surrounding North Shore, with our specially designed EcoKits!
Each kit includes an easy to follow, week-long lesson-plan package (five 50-minute periods), to be facilitated by the classroom teacher or a member of EcoSuperior. Each kit comes complete with a teacher resource binder, student worksheet package, and all necessary supplies and materials to keep your students engaged.
The EcoKits are intended to promote opportunities for hands-on environmental education in a classroom setting. Teachers can borrow an EcoKit for a 2-week period, or purchase for $60 each.
- Grade 5 Science: Litteracy – A hands-on look at waste reduction.
- Grade 7 Science: SpOILed – An investigation into how oil impacts the Great Lakes basin and other aquatic ecosystems.
- Grade 9 Academic Science: Kilowhat? – A study of kilowatt hours, students’ energy consumption and practical conservation strategies.

Summer Day Camp Program Update
Thank you to our community and all of our partners for making this year’s Summer Day Camp Program a success! Despite the circumstances, our team had a wonderful experience hosting our Outdoor Explorers program, and our new Bike Camp program this June.
Please stay tuned for more exciting and engaging opportunities coming to our community, in the summer of 2021.

Lil Buds Playgroup

Join EcoSuperior’s summer education special for youth, Lil’ Buds!
This outdoor playgroup doubles as both a caregiver and little buddy program, at our local Central Natural Environment Gardens. This environmental education program is perfect for youth ages 3-4 years old, who are interested in outdoor learning as we explore the importance of plants, water, insects and more.

Siblings are welcome, although programs are geared towards 3&4 year olds. Younger siblings under 3 are welcome at no cost.
Pricing:
$50 for 4 weeks, or $15 for drop-in.
Speakers & Presentations
Looking for a guest speaker? Our team offers a variety of presentations on topics such as chemicals and health, recycling, personal care products and much more. We can tailor our presentation to fit your group and your time, whether you are looking for a lunch 'n learn session at the office, or an evening presentation to your youth group or church. Depending on program funding, there may be a small fee for the presentation.

Keep it Superior
Get a local perspective on the Lake Superior Watershed with this educational presentation. Using a 3-D model, participants explore a watershed and the effects of stormwater up close. Learn the difference between a storm sewer and a sanitary sewer, and what you can do to help prevent pollutants from entering Lake Superior.

Bike Rodeo
In conjunction with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, Safe Cycling Thunder Bay is proud to offer group courses and presentations to schools. We cover topics such as traffic safety, signaling, bike fit, and ABC bike safety check—while also giving students the opportunity to practice skills in a supervised environment.
Want to put these skills into practice? We also offer a guided on-road group ride to help you with that.
Sessions are available for children in grade 3 and up, and last 1.5 - 2 hours depending on your group's needs.

Safe Cycling For Adults
Need more information about helmet and bike safety checks, the rules of the road, and traffic dynamics? If so, this presentation is perfect for you! Here, we offer a one-hour session that includes skills practice and a group ride to help your group feel more confident on the road. Alternate session length and course content can be requested, based on your group's needs.

Radon Awareness
Did you know that radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada after smoking? The Thunder Bay District Health Unit's 2015 Radon Prevalence Study found that 16% of Thunder Bay homes have high radon. This presentation is perfect for those who wish to learn more about radon gas, its health risks, and simple ways to test and mitigate your home and protect your family.

Rain Garden Workshop
What is a rain garden, and why is it important to have one? This EcoSuperior workshop provides all the information you need to source, obtain, and utilize a beautifully landscaped depression to help keep our lakes and rivers clean.

Recycling Education

Composting and Vermicomposting
Composting is a simple way to reduce your curbside trash by as much as 30%, provide a great source of natural fertilizer for your lawn and garden, and reduce greenhouse gas emisisons (i.e., the warming of our planet!). During this presentation, you’ll learn the basics of both indoor (vermicomposting) and backyard composting, including all the troubleshooting, tips, and tricks you’ll need.

Open Streets
Quite literally, our Open Streets programs are designed to ‘open’ our streets to people- and close them to cars. This simple concept is spreading around the world as a tool to promote active transportation, social integration, and/or economic development. Starting in 2014, our community has hosted 3 successful programs attracting a total of more than 5000 participants! This presentation will highlight the opportunities that Open Streets provide, to help build happier and healthier communities.

Back to the Tap
When we turn on the tap, we automatically receive clean, safe, fresh, Lake Superior water. During this presentation, you’ll investigate how our water gets from the Lake to our taps, and discover how it truly is Superior. This program also offers a fun way for students to examine all aspects of our municipal tap water.
