Your mom knows what's best for you, and the planet!

Hello honey, how are you? I’m calling with bad news. Mr. Smith from next door is in the hospital. He slipped on the ice in his driveway and broke his wrist. Poor dear!
After hearing the news your father rushed right over there to put some de-icing salt onto the driveway. “Don’t do that” I yelled to him, “it’s not good for the environment!” “What’s the problem now?” asked your father in that tone he uses when I am about to talk about the environment.
“All of that salt used to melt winter ice ends up in our water” I answered. “Using salt in the yard is bad for my plants and the deck too” I told him. Then I said that it’s much better to shovel every time it snows and to use sand on the icy patches instead of salt. Your father didn’t look too impressed when I mentioned more shovelling and then I patted his belly and said that a little more exercise wouldn’t hurt. Come to think of it dear, our walkways and your father are now on a low-salt diet!
Remember when you were little and that when it snowed you would run outside to help your dad shovel the driveway and sidewalk? Then you would go next door to shovel for Mr. Smith. “Where are all the kids now?” I asked your father. “They could certainly use the exercise and fresh air” he said.
I have to go now dear, your father is trying to sneak some salt onto his dinner. I love you and don’t forget to send Mr. Smith a get well card.
