A Walkable Thunder Bay!

What is a walkable city?

A walkable city has more than sidewalks!  It has:

  • Trees, shade, places to sit and public art
  • Connections between streets, trails, sidewalks and walkways
  • Shops and services built close to where people live
  • “Complete streets” with crosswalks, slower traffic, bus stops, bike racks, good lighting, greenery and sidewalks

Walkable cities are the best places to live, work, play and do business!

There are many benefits to a walkable Thunder Bay.

  • Neighbourhoods are safer because more people walking means more “eyes on the street.”
  • Our city is inclusive and accessible for all.
  • Neighbours get to know each other better.
  • The city is more attractive to new businesses, tourists and residents.
  • People are safer from traffic.
  • People are more active, healthier and happier.
  • Fewer cars mean cleaner air and less noise.
  • Residential property values increase.
  • Business thrives on walkable streets in downtown areas.

Let’s build a more walkable Thunder Bay!

Think about the places you walk. What makes some streets great places to walk? What’s needed on other streets to make them safer and more enjoyable?

Here's how you can get involved:

  • Help advocate for more complete streets. Take a walk and rate our city streets using the Walk-Friendly Checklist.
  • Take part in city planning consultations.
  • Talk it up with people you know.
  • Let city councillors and other decision makers know you support walkable community design.
  • Join the Active Transportation Thunder Bay Facebook page at
  • Support the efforts of Thunder Bay’s Walkability Committee.

Cities built for cars get more people driving. Cities built for pedestrians and cyclists get more people walking and cycling!
