Community Litter Clean-up

Clean-up kits are available on request (limited supply available)! Email to set up a kit pick-up time.

How to participate

  • decide on your clean-up location, no matter where in Thunder Bay, your clean-up will ultimately prevent litter from entering Lake Superior!
  • do your clean up with your family/household unit, following all SAFETY GUIDELINES (listed below!)
  • make sure to count all the different types of plastic you find and fill out the data sheet provided -- we are collecting this data as part of a larger northwestern Ontario plastics reduction project!
  • complete your data sheet and return to EcoSuperior – completed sheets can be dropped off at the EcoSuperior office mailbox (562 Red River Road) or filled out online
    • Forms can be filled out online HERE: Litter Tracking Form

Please make sure all of the participants in your group read the following safety precautions before taking part in your clean-up. While cleaning up litter is really important for the health and appearance of our environment, your safety has to come first. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic there are a few additional but very important safety measures to follow:

      • Only clean up with members of your household unit
      • Practice physical distancing (2 metre distancing from others)
      • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment including gloves (provided) and masks
      • Wear sturdy footwear, long pants, and bright colours to be visible
      • Avoid touching your face and wash hands or use hand sanitizer frequently
      • Avoid reaching into areas (bushes, dark water, etc.) where visibility is difficult. Use a stick or tool to avoid the possibility of injury from hidden sharp objects.  If you can’t get an item safely, please leave it alone.
      • Keep solid containers on hand for sharp objects (glass, metal, etc.) and pick-up only with proper protection and tools
        • If you find a needle/syringe:
          • Do not touch it - leave the needle where it is.
          • Mark the spot so it will be easy for others to see.
          • Make a detailed description of where the needle is located.
            • Call Superior Points at 625-8831 or 625-7996 for pick-up.

Please Note: Each clean-up group is responsible for organizing their own event, including ensuring the safety of their participants.  EcoSuperior provides support and supplies but taking the recommended safety precautions is the responsibility of the individual participant
