Farewell Friend

The environmental community lost a very special ally with the recent passing of Jake Vander Wal. His passion for "making a Great Lake Superior" was instrumental in the development of the Remedial Action Plans Program, Lake Superior Programs Office, and the Lake Superior Binational Forum. His efforts to restore and protect Lake Superior were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Binational Forum. Last year, the Mission Marsh Islands and surrounding waters were re-named "The Jake Vander Wal Habitat Creation Project".

Jake requested that if friends so desire, donations in his memory be made to EcoSuperior or other environmental organizations. Those who wish to make a contribution to EcoSuperior may do so by mail or in person (Mon - Fri 8:30-4:30) at 212 Miles St. East, Thunder Bay, ON P7C 1J6. Please note that as a non-profit organization, we are unable to issue charitable receipts.

In cooperation with the Vander Wal family, our staff and board of directors will decide on an appropriately memorable project for the total of donations received in Jake's memory. Your thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

The Energywise House Tour Is Back!

Superior Renewable Energy Co-op (SREC) is looking for demonstration homes to participate in the EnergyWise Home Tour once again this fall. The tour will take place Saturday October 4th 2008, the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Since our last tour, two years ago, we are looking forward to seeing the innovative technologies installed in the homes of our area. We would like to present homes that demonstrate progress on the renewable energy front or are uniquely energy efficient.

Any unique or unconventional way your home saves energy would make it a great addition to our tour. Participation involves making your home available for a full day of tours by the general public, with the assistance of on-site volunteers.

If you're interested in opening your home for the tour please contact project coordinator Derek Tessier at 624-2655 or email EcoSuperior info@ecosuperior.org with the following information:

  • Location of the home or building
  • Energy-saving construction method or renewable energy installation
The organizing committee will select the participating homes by the end of April - mid May.
