THE STORY OF GARBAGE TOWN

Kindergarten students will participate in an interactive story telling about two towns: Garbage Town and Recycle Town. The residents of each town live differently and the appearance of their towns soon reflects it. The story introduces the concepts of reduce, reuse, recycle and is followed up with a colouring/cut & paste sheet to illustrate the town where students would most like to live.

I CAN WALK TO SCHOOL
Grade 3
This program introduces the idea of active transportation. Research suggests that while 68% of Canadian children live within a 30 minute walk from their school, only 36% walk. Your students will have a chance to think about safety features to look for while travelling to school by foot, bike, rollerblade etc, think about features in your school neighbourhood and map out a safe route. It is never to early to start thinking about the benefits of active transit for ourselves and for our planet!
UNDERSTANDING OUR ENERGY USE
Grade 5 & 6
This program focuses on the energy used by everyday electronics in the classroom and home. A Kill-A-Watt meter can measure energy consumption. Your class will have the opportunity to explore the energy uses of some small electronics. The usages will be compared and rated, and students will be challenged to create their own pledge-"my Kill-A-Watt thought", to help remain conscious of energy consumption.
WASTE REDUCTION WEEK
Grade 4,5,6
EcoSuperior and Lakehead University Education students will be visiting classrooms during Waste Reduction Week, sharing fun and practical ideas on how to reduce waste. Waste Reduction Week is an annual event taking place in October. Find more information on the program here.
THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Grade 7
Have your students explore the greenhouse effect. They will see how greenhouse gases affect the atmosphere through an interactive role play. The human contribution toward greenhouse gases will be examined and in particular our carbon dioxide production. The presentation will finish with practical ideas and solutions to reduce our contribution towards these emissions.
STUDY OUR STREAMS
Grade 4 & 7
Students can experience 'hands-on' the wonders of life in streams and rivers. Using puzzle pieces and drawings, students learn about the strange adaptations of many creatures to their watery world. Your class will love getting a close-up view of live underwater creatures gathered from a local stream ecosystem. The session wraps up with tips to protect streams and the creatures that live in them. All of these experiences happen without leaving the classroom! (Spring Sessions Only). More info on the overall Study Our Streams program here .
GARBAGE GRAFFITI
For Community Groups
This activity addresses the source of most of our garbage as well as options for disposal. Your group will visit stations to brainstorm ideas, come up with solutions and leave thinking about our garbage. The activity can also be done outdoors, with a scavenger hunt approach to search for each station.
Lesson plans also available to complement your classroom unit.
