Green:
- Walk, cycle, ride the bus or carpool to your site.
- Bring snacks and drinks in re-useable containers.
- Use garden or work gloves, instead of disposables.
- Sort the litter into recyclables and garbage.
- For large groups, smaller bags or containers can be used for collecting litter, and then used to fill Spring Up bags.
Safe:
- Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear, long pants, gloves and sun protection.
- Avoid reaching into areas (bushes, dark water, etc.) where visibility is difficult. Use a stick or tool to avoid the possibility of injury from hidden sharp objects. Remember if you can’t get an item safely, please leave it alone. Make a note with the location and call Karen at 624-2148.
- Keep a solid container on hand for sharp objects or hazardous waste, such as household batteries (these can be taken to the Hazardous Waste Depot). Pick up only with proper protection and tools. See If you find a needle information below.
- Report large items (tires, car batteries, appliances, etc.) to EcoSuperior so we can arrange to have them picked up (please call Karen at 624-2148 with specific details about items and location).
- Keep extra water and a first aid kit on hand.
If You Find a Needle/Syringe
Children should be taught never to touch a discarded needle but to show an adult where it is. If you find a needle during Spring Up to Clean Up, or at any time on your property or in the community:
- Do not touch it--leave the needle where it is. If possible, cover it with a hard object (i.e. a container).
- Mark the spot so it will be easy to find again. Make a detailed description of where the needle is located.
- Call Superior Points at (807) 625-7996 for disposal information.
Please Note: For the health and safety of your community and sanitation workers, used needles are not accepted in the garbage or recyclables (Contact City of Thunder Bay, Waste Management Division at 684-2195 for more information).
Notice: EcoSuperior and the City of Thunder Bay provide support for community-wide litter clean-up efforts during Spring Up to Clean Up, in the form of bags, gloves, prizes and public recognition. Each clean-up group is responsible for organizing their own event, including ensuring the safety of their participants.
Thank you for your participation and your help in keeping Thunder Bay beautiful!
