Back to School, the Sustainable Way

Back to School, the Sustainable Way

As the new school year approaches, it's a great time to think about how we can set students up for success while caring for our planet. By making a few small changes, families can reduce waste, save money, and build eco-friendly habits that last all year long.

Reuse Before You Buy
Before heading out to shop for school supplies, take inventory of what you already have. Notebooks with blank pages, extra pencils, or last year's backpack can all be reused.

Pack a Zero Waste Lunch
Swap single-use plastic bags and wrappers for reusable containers, beeswax wraps, and refillable water bottles. This not only reduces waste but also keeps lunches fresh and healthy.

Choose Active Transportation
Walking or biking to school is a win-win! It's good for the environment, boosts physical health, and improves focus in the classroom. If walking or biking isn't possible, consider carpooling or taking public transit.

Shop Second-Hand
Thrift stores are a treasure trove for gently used clothing, backpacks, and even school supplies. It's budget-friendly and helps keep items out of landfills.

Look for Eco-Friendly Products
When you do need to buy new, choose items made from recycled or renewable materials. From paper to pens, there are many sustainable options available.

Go Paperless Where Possible
Digital textbooks, note-taking apps, and online resources can cut down on paper use. If you must use paper, choose recycled paper products.

Join an Eco Club
Get involved at school by joining (or starting) an environmental club. It's a great way to make friends, learn new skills, and help lead sustainability projects.

Bring Your Own Bag
Whether you're buying supplies, clothes, or lunch, carry a reusable bag to avoid single-use plastic.

By making mindful choices this back-to-school season, we can all help build a healthy future for people and the planet.
